Contemporary Kitchen Cabinets
In today’s modern households, contemporary kitchen
cabinets can make or break both the appearance and
functionality of any kitchen.
There are many practical uses for cabinets.
You store food in them along with cooking equipment and even
dishes and silverware. But they also have to look good. And in
an ideal kitchen they will even hide unsightly appliances like
your microwave. They can even be used to hide built in
appliances like dishwashers, ovens and even refrigerators.
Basic Composition
A kitchen cabinet is made of six-sided
wooden boxes. The box is blocked on five sides and an open door
on the sixth side. Solid wood is a great choice for cabinet
components such as doors, face frames, drawer fonts, and many
others. However solid wood is also costly, and that’s why so
many contemporary kitchen cabinets are made from plywood and
even particle board. That is especially true for flat shaped
sections such as cabinet sides, shelves, and drawer bottoms.
The strength of the wood is vital in some cabinets because
frequently they are asked to support a heavy load.
Where strength is an important factor, high
quality particle board plywood should be considered. Cabinet
frames are designed from medium density fiberboard (MDF), solid
wood, particle board, and plywood. The floating panel of the
door may be plywood which is confined within the MDF frame.
Today, MDF core is used in most cabinet drawers and doors.
Highly finished particle board is used in most of the drawer
fronts and doors which is performed by the lamination process
with high pressure. There are several types of kitchen cabinet
components including bases, adjustable feet, compartments,
cabinet inserted hardware and tops.
Basic design
Today, the kitchen has become the focal
point in many homes. As a result, its design must be of utmost
importance. The design of a kitchen cabinet depends on various
important factors that are listed below.
The first aspect is the time spent in the
kitchen and the purpose for the kitchen cabinets.
The next aspect is the required space needed
for kitchen work. Often, limited space may lead to unique
design and creative work.
Another important aspect is if the kitchen
is to be used as a workspace, dining room, laundry room, and
size and dimension of appliances.
Types of kitchen cabinets
There are two types of kitchen cabinets
found in today’s market which include free-standing and
built-in cabinets. Usually, free-standing cabinets exist as
off-the-shelf items that are portable. This allows them to be
shifted from one place to another as necessary. These types of
cabinets can be easily hung on a wall or from the ceiling.
A built-in cabinet, on the other hand, is
normally made for a specific situation and is kept in a fixed
position against the wall, on the floor, or hung in an
opening.
The perfect example of a modern kitchen is
one that comprises a built-in cabinet. Cabinets are in the form
of two types: face frame and frameless construction. Most
modern cabinets are frameless and are usually constructed by
man-made material sheets including plywood, MDF, or chipboard.
The surfaces of these materials are usually decorated by
plastic lamination, timber, veneer and numerous other
materials.
It’s interesting that what are now
considered contemporary kitchen cabinets is actually a return
to the quality of earlier work being solid and hard wood all
the way through.
